Ever since my daughter was diagnosed with autism in 2001, I have researched and implemented various programs and treatments in an effort to help her. I am truly thankful that my daughter has improved greatly since being diagnosed with autism at the age of two. The two methods that have helped my daughter significantly are Relationship Development Intervention (RDI) and Autism Movement Therapy. With this in mind, I was really pleased to come across the following information:
Joanne Lara, M.A. Special Education, has announced that she has assumed the position of Master Teacher at the RDI treatment program for autism spectrum disorders. Founded by Dr. Steven Gutstein, RDI is a parent-centered program designed to establish and nurture missing pathways in the brains of children with autism. RDI provides consultation to families to address the core deficits, which include flexible thinking, communication and development of self, as well as social and emotional relationships.
Joanne Lara is the founder of Autism Movement Therapy, the first movement and musical therapy of its kind that incorporates innovative inter-hemispheric sensory integration strategies (neuro-plasticity) using movement and music. AMT is designed to unlock and improve communication, cognitive and academic skills as well as increase social and behavioral awareness skills in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
“I am so excited and honored to work with Dr. Gutstein and his RDI consultants as a Master Teacher at the RDI School,” exclaimed Ms. Lara. “Dr.Gutstein has developed an extraordinary program that can dramatically improve a child’s communication skills and develop deeper, more meaningful experiences that they can share with others. This type of advanced treatment offers life-long benefits for the both parents and individuals with autism.”

I have been fortunate to have exchanged e-mail messages with Ms. Lara regarding Autism Movement Therapy. Without question, she is passionate about and committed to helping children with autism. I have not met Dr. Gutstein personally, but my daughter’s RDI program is overseen by a consultant who was trained by Dr. Gutstein. I am grateful, but not fully surprised, that the founders of these two methods of autism treatment are now working together. After all, I had combined these methods a few years ago. To me, it is a safe bet that other parents had also done the same.

Dr. Alfred Tomatis, a French otolaryngologist, is recognised as the modern day originator of sound or music therapy. In the early 1950’s he developed an effective therapy method using altered music to treat conditions such as auditory processing disorder, dyslexia, attention deficit disorder and autism. Another French doctor, Dr. Guy Bérard, developed a similar method, Auditory Integration Training (AIT), which has found many followers in the USA. From personal experience I know that many clients report improvements in understanding, speech, balance, behaviour and emotional well-being after just two or three weeks of daily sound therapy.
Sensory Activation Solutions (SAS) is an organisation with Centres in the U.K. and Turkey that provides a unique service for children and adults that face learning or developmental difficulties. When the established educational, psychological or medical services fail to provide adequate support, the SAS methodology often can provide practical solutions that result in noticeable improvements in daily life.

Their Auditory Activation Method builds on the pioneering work of Dr. Tomatis and Dr. Bérard and has been specifically developed with the aim to improve sensory processing, interhemispheric integration and cognitive functioning. It has helped many children and adults with a wide range of difficulties, ranging from dyslexia and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder to sensory processing disorders and autism. It is not a cure or medical intervention, but a structured training programme that can help alleviate some of the debilitating effects that these conditions can have on speech and physical ability, daily behaviour, emotional well-being and educational or work performance.
There is no catch, it’s absolutely free and most importantly often effective. Check it out at: http://www.sascentre.com/uk/uk_free.html.
